Shambhala at the Great Wall is located in a private valley called “Shentangyu” meaning “Spirit Temple Valley”. The lodge is housed in a restored Manchurian hunting lodge and situated on 50 hectares. Not only do mountains surround the property and streams course through it, part of the Great Wall built by Qin Shihuangdi is located within the property. Shambhala has carefully restored the Buddhist shrines historically housed in the valley; some of these shrines contain carvings pre-dating the Tang Dynasty. The Great Wall of China may be ascended within a matter of minutes as Shambhala at the Great Wall guards one of the protected entry points. The lodge’s staff is always happy to prepare picnic lunches and backpacks are available upon request.
The common room of Shambhala at the Great Wall’s Tibetan Tiger Lodge features a beautifully crafted stone fireplace which serves as a calming gathering area in cooler temperatures. Vistas of the Great Wall are enjoyed throughout the year. And visitors can enjoy relaxing and reinvigorating treatments at the Tibetan Tantric Space Spa.
Shambhala at the Great Wall offers sophisticated Manchurian dining set in the restored horse stable and animal sighting pavilion of the former hunting lodge. An open air upstairs pavilion provides a scenic setting for spring, summer and fall dining.
As the first eco-tourism resort in Beijing, Shambhala at the Great Wall serves as a model for responsible tourism and a contrast to the indiscriminate and reckless development characterizing this area. The Lodge is staffed entirely by Tibetans and offers a window on Shambhala Serai geo-tourism experiences in the Himalayas and the cultural heritage and ethnic identity preservation program managed by Shambhala. The Lodge also provides a sanctuary for dogs who are often victim of official anti-animal campaigns.
